Javier Martínez-Cantó has presented the first conclusions of the research "Partidism and federal (dis)loyalty in the Spanish Autonomous State" in a seminar with academics held in the Palau Macaya with the objective of exchanging opinions with researchers related to the subject. Martínez-Cantó is the winner of the 2018 Pasqual Maragall Legacy Research Assistance granted annually by the Catalonia-Europe Foundation with the support of the Barcelona City Council and the Generalitat de Catalunya.

The author of the research starts from the premise that the territorial organization of the Spanish State is semi-federal, since the regions have a high degree of self-government, but have little weight in the central organs. The research analyzes the behavior of each party since the first democratic elections, both centrally and autonomously.

Some of the initial conclusions of the study are that two state-level parties will always prioritize the left-right axis or that coalitions between two parties at the Spanish level are the least likely. On the other hand, the study shows that the probability of an autonomous government terminating early is lower if there is congruence with the central government. Regarding the competence level of the autonomies, Martínez-Cantó notes an increase in transfers when an autonomous party has greater bargaining power. However, if it is a state party that is in the government of an autonomy, the influence is exercised through the party itself, especially when there is congruence with the central government.
