Café Europa: "The war in Ukraine, a year later"

Coinciding with the first anniversary of the beginning of the Russian invasion, the Catalunya Europa Foundation and the Horizonte Europa Association have organized a new online session of the Café Europa series of debates with the aim of taking stock and analyzing the perspectives of the war.

A year after the start of Russia’s bombing of Ukraine, we take stock of this devastating conflict that would have already caused more than two hundred thousand dead soldiers, and according to the United Nations Office for Human Rights, some eighteen thousand civilian casualties and injuries, and about eight million refugees from Ukraine throughout Europe.

In the early hours of 24 February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the start of a military operation that is still going on, despite the resistance of the Ukrainian population against Russian aggression, with unexpected solidity by the Kremlin and with the allied support of Europe and the United States.

The following speakers participated on this occasion:

  • Carme Colomina, senior researcher at CIDOB (Barcelona Centre for International Affairs) and president of the Association of European Journalists of Catalonia (APEC). In addition, she is an associate professor at the Pompeu Fabra University and the College of Europe in Bruges (Belgium) and has been a correspondent in Brussels and international head of Catalunya Ràdio and the newspaper ARA.
  • Roger Persiva, journalist and special envoy to Ukraine on several occasions for the television networks Mediaset, Televisa and Univision. Currently, he works at the RAC1 delegation in Madrid, and has also been a news presenter at Cuatro, CNN+ and Betevé, as well as editor at Catalunya Ràdio and RNE.

After a few words of welcome by the president of the Catalonia Europe Foundation, Airy Maragall, the session was presented by the director of the Catalonia Europe Foundation, Dolors Camats, and the president of the Horizon Europe Association, Albert Royo, has moderated the chat with questions from attendees.

The series of online debates Café Europa is held on the last Friday of each month and is organized by the Catalunya Europa Foundation and the Horizonte Europa Association.
