Café Europa: "How to guarantee peace and security in Europe?"

How to ensure peace in Europe in a changing geopolitical context? What are the EU’s security and foreign policy challenges? The Catalunya Europa Foundation and the Horizonte Europa Association have held a new session of the monthly online debate cycle Café Europa on Friday 28 April from 9h to 10h.

On this occasion, we have counted on Jordi Armadans, political scientist, journalist, director of FundiPau (1996-2023) and author of the book Pau. The value of life today (2022), with whom we have talked about the transformations and reinterpretations of security and the defense of peace in Europe.

NATO is calling on EU countries to increase military spending to 2% of GDP, and Spain has already increased its defence budget to 23%, according to the Delàs Center for Peace Studies. What is the defense and security model we want in the world? What is Europe’s role in this new bipolar world order between the United States and China? Where does the war take us to Ukraine? How long is the current escalation of war to achieve peace and stability on the continent sustainable? These are some of the issues to open the debate and rethink how we can tackle the multiple crises affecting Europe, and what the role of European institutions and citizens is in the face of these new challenges and threats.

The presentation of the debate was given by Albert Royo, president of the Horizon Europe Association; and Dolors Camats, director of the Catalunya Europa Foundation, moderated the dialogue with the rapporteur by moving questions from the audience to the session.
