In a recent analysis, Argentinian activist Ofelia Fernández reflected on the victory of Javier Milei, underscoring the existing rift between society and politics in Argentina today. Fernández diagnoses that in the face of failed public services and a state perceived as inefficient and corrupt, citizens are disconnected from the security that the Welfare State should offer. While the left has not proposed concrete alternatives, limiting itself to defending a failed status quo, the extreme right has proposed clear, albeit controversial, alternatives. At the same time, the historian Steven Forti, in his book Extrema derecha 2.0, citing the political scientist Ricardo Chueca, points out that "each country gives life to the extreme right that it needs".
This statement and Fernández's reflection highlight the need to address the specific challenges of each society to prevent them from becoming a fertile ground for far-right discourses where it grows and becomes stronger.
In this context, the Catalunya Europa Foundation and the Goethe Institute in Barcelona are pleased to invite you to the colloquium between Thomas Krüger and Eva Anzuiza on the state of democracy in Europe in these turbulent times to reflect on the need for a new social contract in which citizens feel represented.
The event, entitled "Europe: Complex times, democratic solutions", will take place on Wednesday 24 July at 6.30 pm in the Bohigas Room of the Ateneu Barcelonès.
