Presentation of the Re-City's challenges

What is Re-City?

Re-City was born as an international platform for social sustainability, promoted by the Catalunya Europa Foundation. Its challenges are meeting the great global challenges of today and bringing proposals for real change and transformation. It is a project born to rethink, replan and react from cities to the main economic, social and environmental challenges that affect the planet. This program aims to make Barcelona a benchmark for debate and dialogue between academic, scientific, social, citizen, business and political sectors to provide concrete ideas and solutions.

The challenges of Re-City

The Re-City platform began in June 2017 with a series of conference debates and reflections entitled “Combating Inequalities”. After this cycle, the project has continued with other challenges that we detail below.

Fighting inequalities

Xavier Ramos

One of the great global challenges that condition the current moment and which explains our time is inequality. The evolution of globalization processes, led by the neoliberal agenda, has accelerated the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few and accentuated the disproportion between an economic elite, the so-called 1% of the population and the rest of the humanity, in a process that questions the foundations of our present and future society.

Facing climate change

Xavier Rodó

In 2014, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) revealed that human activity is the main cause of global warming and that climate change represents an immediate threat and potentially irreversible effects. Climate change is perceived today as the greatest challenge of our time, the adverse effects it causes are jeopardizing the current functioning of the planet, and its impact threatens the survival of many societies and biological systems.

The future is intercultural

Gemma Pinyol

In an increasingly globalized world, which faces shared challenges and draws scenarios where many different actors are participating, it is essential to review the instruments, initiatives and proposals articulated to advance in the construction of safe, democratic, innovative and prosperous societies.
